Forests Ecosystems and Climate Change

Forested areas in the Grand Est region cover 1.9 million hectares, accounting for one-third of the region’s total land area. As the fourth most forested region in France, Grand Est bears an important national responsibility for maintaining and preserving these environments and their associated species.
Forests, as vital biodiversity refuges, play a crucial role in environmental regulation, resource provision and enhancing the quality of life for local communities.

LIFE Biodiv’Est is committed to forest conservation

 The establishment of a forest observatory across the six regional natural parks enables us to closely track the long-term evolution of forest habitats.

 By selecting two research forests as experimental sites to improve forest management, we aim to identify the best silvicultural practices to enhance the resilience and resistance of forest stands in the face of climate change.

Through the implementation of payments for ecosystem services and the establishment of at least 200 senescence islets, we are dedicated to conserving unmanaged forest zones vital for sustaining ecological equilibrium.
