What is the LIFE programme?
The LIFE programme provides funding for projects focused on protecting the environment and tackling climate change. Supported by the European Commission, LIFE Biodiv’Est brings together a wide range of stakeholders to develop both strategic and practical actions for biodiversity.

Launched in February 2022 for a 10-year period, LIFE Biodiv’Est is a major catalyst for accelerating and expanding biodiversity restoration and conservation efforts in the Grand Est region.

LIFE, a tool of the Regional biodiversity Strategy
Establishing 10 new nature reserve, supporting 200 industrial sites committed to biodiversity, raising awareness among youth and the wider public, and creating quiet zones offer peaceful habitats for wildlife – these are just a few of the key actions set out in the Regional Biodiversity Strategy to protect and restore biodiversity across the Grand Est region.
It’s clear that to meet this challenge together, we must get businesses, farmers, associations, the general population, etc. more actively involved and provide additional resources to drive action. This is exactly what the LIFE programme aims to do by combining expertise, knowledge-building, training and community engagement, all of which form the essential foundation for carrying out ambitious projects throughout the region.
Engineering, awareness and knowledge development
The 27 actions carried out within the project are cross-cutting and directly or indirectly address all regional ecological issues, including notable and common habitats and species, as well as ecological reservoirs and corridors. They address the following objectives :
- Improving knowledge of regional biodiversity
- Technical engineering and support for project leaders working on the restoration of green and blue corridors, wetlands and grasslands. This includes associations, local authorities such as mayors and economic stakeholders from industry, agriculture and tourism
- Raising awareness and providing training to incorporate water and biodiversity topics into professional development, while fostering active involvement among young people
- Research and innovation focused on adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, with the Grand Est region being one of the most affected areas in France, impacting forest, agricultural and urban environments alike

With over €26 million committed over 10 years, the LIFE programme also benefits from co-financing by the State (DREAL), the Grand Est Region, the three relevant water agencies (Rhin-Meuse, Seine-Normandie, Rhône-Méditerranée-Corse) and the French Biodiversity Office (OFB, Office Français de la Biodiversité).
The programme also relies on 14 partners, including the six Regional Natural Parks, the Forest National Park, the Champagne-Ardenne, Lorraine and Alsace Conservatoires of natural areas, the regional environmental education network in Alsace (ARIENA), the Grand Est Regional Chamber of Agriculture, the National Botanical Conservatory of the Paris Basin (CBNBP) and the Grand Est Natural Data Office (Odonat).
